Now, that can still happen, but I need to run Firefox, discord, VMware, office, an explorer window and two other light win32 apps for it to start fatiguing. Another time I got chrome to crash the display driver or smth, I really don’t know how). One time I got it to even invert all the colours of the screen for one second and then come back. some parts of the ui would be inverted, rotated. before some manual configuration inside windows, opening discord and YouTube would have heat up the laptop to almost its max, and then the gpu would start glitching out what’s on the display (e.g. the screen hinge is a bit loose sometimes now the trackpad too is starting to not work reliably when it wants to work, it’s a perfectly fine laptop that does its job Otherwise try to go with a laptop with at least a 12th gen, Vene better: wait a little bit longer if possible until the AMD 7000series and Intel 13th gen arrive on laptops, and you will set with performance and much better Battery life. So in conclusion: perhaps you can consider a current M1 (if you want to save some money) or M2 MacBook, but for that I don’t know how well they perform with CAD workloads. Your iPad will beat the SLS in every hand writing way possible. The touch screen is nice, but as you say you have an iPad and that’s not even close in comparison. The 11th gen CPU is basically hot garbage, just what has been released in the last two years basically kicks it’s ass multiple times, while also consuming much less energy.Īs the CPU is extremely inefficient, the battery life is basically not existent. It’s probably the worst timing to get one, and that’s not only because the product itself isn’t really good to begin with. Surface Laptop Studio: 14.4″ 2400 x 1600 (3.8M) 201 ppiĪ Surface Pro is more than enough for CAD,Īnd if you need more, you can always attach an eGPU.Īnd the switch between handwriting and laptop mode is annyoing.Īnd you get more writing angles, and easier to hold in portrait orientation. (see my post history to see my desk setup). Mine is quite heavy, so I keep it tied to my desk usually. On the downside they're pricey, and the battery life off charger is not the best. I do enjoy that I can go from typing like a hurricane to fine edges on a Floorplan with my pen without breaking a stride, and it opens up the number of practical places I can work from. The built-in charger for my Slim Pen 2 is a cool surprise and the hinge is really useful, though it's not for everyone, and it feels like it would not handle much force in the wrong direction at all. I will say using it as a hand-held tablet for any amount of time is clunky - it does weigh a bit in hand.īut it never ceases to impress me and so long as I give it a restart once a week or so, it's not even flinched against a 50 hour work week for almost a year now. The boot up is fast, the display is gorgeous, and the responses for things like rendering, bouncing, and drawing are much faster than my previous MBPr (2018). Rarely have any issues, and have a near constant assault of Revu, Revit, InDesign, Excel, and Pro Tools/Media Composer running. I daily drive my top-spec SLS daily as an engineer, and I absolutely love it. Same here, it was my biggest fear before I got my SP5 a few years ago. Weight is the primary issue when holding it.įor just notes I might prefer the Surface Pro, but I also want a laptop and while I was kind of surprised how well the kickstand + keyboard folio works, when I tried one for a week last year The thickness isn't really an issue as long as your hand rests entirely on the screen or besides it on the table laptops considered: xps13/15, flow z13, spectre 14 x360 already have an ipad (though i really hate it) already have a powerful desktop at home battery life is pretty good for this type of laptop although I already own an ipad, I find myself wanting to write some notes on my laptop as well. My hobby is photography and so sometimes I do use photoshop and a pen would be great. While a dGPU isn’t really a must in undergraduate level, it will definitely be helpful. I am majoring in Aerospace engineering and would be doing some CAD, CFD and Solidwork stuffs. I have considered multiple options but kept coming back into considering the SLS. My macbook is showing quite a lot of problems and I am currently looking for a replacement.
